British Swimming is aiming to secure the services of leading professionals within the sport as it implements a new performance programme designed to maximise outcomes at the 2012 Olympics while providing a legacy for the future.
The governing body will be recruiting a new British Head Coach and Development Coach, Sports Science Sports Medicine Manager, Open Water Performance Manager and several Head Coaches based within a new network of Intensive Training Centres across Britain.
These posts provide a unique opportunity to work within British Swimming as it continues to develop throughout the quadrennial leading to the London Olympics while ensuring the pathway for talent and development is sustainable beyond 2012.
British Swimming National Performance Director Michael Scott is looking for the highest-calibre of candidates to fill the positions to collectively provide an enhanced system of support for athletes, coaches and programmes at the World Class level throughout Britain.
The British Swimming Coaches & Teachers Association (BSCTA) has announced a series of Swimming Coaching Clinics to be held during the 9th FINA World Swimming Championships in Manchester in April 2008

AstralPool are putting the competition pool to be used at the World Championships (25m) up for sale. AstralPool are partner to FINA (International Federation of Aquatics) and are the company behind the two temporary pools fitted in the M.E.N. Arena from 9-13 April.
The main pool will be a competition standard 25 x 25 x 2 (depth) metre pool and would be ideal as a permanent installation as a community pool amongst other options. The pool comes with competition equipment used at the 9th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) as well as a manufacturers warranty.

Relay Team impress on road to 2012 Games
Britain showcased the emerging talent of its sprint relay team at the European Championships in Eindhoven tonight and they impressed with a best time as they continue their development towards the London 2012 Olympics. The 4x100m Freestyle quartet of Chris Fox (Wolverhampton), Adam Brown (Swansea), Ryan Bennett (Bolton Metro) and Grant Turner (Loughborough University) finished seventh in 3:20.96. It was a big step up for a team that secured the silver at last year's European Junior Championships and one that left a positive impression on coach Chris Nesbit.
"The aim here was to go faster than they did last summer and they did that by a one-and-a-half second drop from July," said Nesbit. "It was a great achievement for the guys when you take into account they're not rested and Fox only returned to the UK from the Offshore Centre in Australia on Saturday."
The teenagers swam strongly in the morning with Brown and Turner both swimming 49second legs to place eighth into the final in 3:21.67. "It's a team that is developing all of the time and the pleasing thing is that there are more male sprinters coming through the British Swimming system," explained Nesbit.
"This trip is all about experience and they'll take that to the British Championships later this month where Olympic places are there for the taking. The main aim for this quartet is the 2012 Olympics and what we're seeing is very encouraging."

Just a reminder to everyone that the next trial for the Regional Training Centres for the South West will be held at the next Regional Development Clinic which is being held at Millfield School on Saturday 19 April 2008 (4pm 7pm), at a cost of £5.00.
The Regional Training Centres are, for this term, being held at two centres, GL1 in Gloucester or Pyramid Pool at Exeter. You must make at least eight of the 10 week sessions. The total cost of a term is £55.

Poolside coaching hours average 12 per week plus 1 hour land training. Plus attendance at Club, County & District competitions, Local and Speedo leagues.
Newton Abbot is a teaching and competitive swimming club with approx. 400 members. Club activities include Learn to Swim, Water Polo, Competitive squads and Open Water competition. The Club swim in Teignbridge Leisure Centre all year round and use the open air pool at Teignmouth during the summer for water polo.
The Club achieved Swim 21 accreditation on September 2006 and this was renewed in 2007. Club teams compete in County and District competitions, Speedo League, Devon and West Cornwall League and a number of Local Competitions. Individual swimmers compete in County and District and a few in National Competitions. They also have a good showing in Open Meets in the South West.
The Club are seeking to appoint a dynamic, experienced, enthusiastic and highly committed Head Coach who will work closely with the Club Committee and our dedicated team of coaches and teachers to move the Club forward, with particular focus on the competitive squad, and to assist with the introduction of the new National Teaching Plan.

Gloucester is to host the European Junior Synchronised Swimming Championships 2009 after LEN confirmed the bid had been successful.
LEN, the European federation for aquatic sports, awarded the event to Gloucester at the European Swimming Championships in Eindhoven, Holland and complimented the city on the quality of the bid.
British Swimming Chief Executive David Sparkes has welcomed the announcement which he sees as an integral part of synchronised swimming development within the UK in readiness for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The British Diving squad made their return to the international circuit at the LEN European Diving Championships hungry to replicate their performance at the World Cup last month. After qualifying places in every event at the Olympic Games, the LEN European Diving Championships provided the 13-strong squad with their next international challenge as they prepare for the biggest sporting event in the world this summer.
National Performance Director Steve Foley had been impressed with the performances from the squad over the last six months and was anticipating another strong performance in Eindhoven. "I am looking for the squad to keep up the momentum of the last few week and I think if we can do that we will be able to get a few medals at the competition.

Duet secure final spot
Britain's Jenna Randall and Olivia Allison booked their spots in the final of the Duet Free Routine after once again showing their true potential on an international stage. The first event for the British Champions was the Free routine where they showcased their new programme. Randall and Allison have been working on this routine for just over six months and after a series of amendments the girls were ready for the European stage.
They showed good synchronisation throughout the routine to secure high eights and took ninth place with a total of 86.400 points.
Randall and Allison debuted their new technical routine at the British Championships in December. National Performance Director Biz Price increased the level of difficulty in this routine to make the girls step up to the next level.
When over 700 athletes from over 120 countries descend on Manchester for the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in April, they will be doing so in a purposely-converted concert arena. The Championships run from 9-13 April at The M.E.N Arena where the likes of Madonna and U2 have graced centre stage.
However, in April the venue will be filled with two temporary 25m swimming pools with 10,000 seats as some of the worlds finest athletes descend on the city to take part in one of the greatest swimming events to be held in the UK since the 1948 Olympics in London.
The ASA has highlighted dry land training facilities for divers as being an essential part of any long term national facilities strategy. Dry land training is a vital element of the sports development, with divers dividing their time between the water and the gym, and the national governing feels this should be an important factor when looking at facilities.
ASA chief Executive David Sparkes explained: What must be remembered when talking about diving facilities is that 50% of a divers training, from early beginnings, is conducted on dry land in gyms and sports halls, utilising equipment such as trampolines, harnesses and crash mats. The development of these facilities is just as important as pool facilities.
There are over 100 diving pools nationwide which are available to experienced divers and while this is a sufficient figure to meet the sports current demands there are areas were we still need some investment.
British Swimming and Alliance & Leicester are to begin working in partnership as part of a new British Olympic Association (BOA) initiative.
The bank will provide support and advice to British Swimming, the sports national governing body which is based in Loughborough, Leicestershire as it continues its development into a world class organisation.
The overall initiative is endorsed by FTSE, the global Index Company, is known as the FTSE-BOA initiative, and is matching 33 major British companies with the 33 National Governing Bodies of Olympic Sports. The aim is to transfer skills and knowledge from businesses to enhance the organisational development and governance structures of each sports governing body.

At the Cornwall County Championships, four World Disability Records were broken, subject to ratification. Jonathan Fox took both the 100m and 200m World Short Course Records in the S7 class (1:13.81 vs 1:14.47; 2:38.11 vs 2:55.33)
Matt Whorwood claimed the 200m breaststroke World record in the S6 class (3:17.46 vs 3:28 49) and Ben Procter the World Record in the 200m backstroke in the S14 class (2:20.48 vs 2:21.18). Matt has already submitted tree further British records from the County Champs in the 400m IM, 800 free, and 1500 free.
All three boys are part of the very powerful and growing Newquay Cormorants Disability swim training programme. Coach Phil Goldman said that the boys were in fantastic shape and would now be fine tuned for the Paralympic Trials at Sheffield at the end of the month.

The Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) is inviting members of the leisure industry to attend a Pools for the Future Facilities Seminar on the eve of the World Championships in Manchester.
The seminar will highlight the ASAs desire to drive swimming provision forward and the national governing body is calling upon the leisure industry to join in them in their vision for swimming.
By attending the seminar everyone will have the opportunity to learn about pool development from some of the best in the business before a tour of the temporary steel pools constructed in the Manchester Evening News Arena ready for the FINA World Championships.
British diver and Beijing Olympic qualifier, 13-year-old Tom Daley, today (10 March) pledged his support for childrens charity the NSPCC and its service ChildLine, the UK's free, 24-hour helpline for children in distress or danger.
Daley, who recently became the second youngest person ever to qualify for the British Olympic team, started diving at the age of eight and has since made a massive impact in national and international competitions.
Dame Mary Marsh, NSPCC Chief Executive said: Tom is a positive role model and inspiration to many young people. As a 13-year old he understands the difficulties children and young people face when growing up. Around 18 months ago, Tom was the victim of bullying, but he was able to talk about the problem with his friends and family sadly that is not the case for 2,500 children who speak to ChildLine counsellors every day.

Little Britain star David Walliams and Olympic rower James Cracknell have completed their "swim to Africa" to raise money for the BBC's Sport Relief.
They swam 12 miles across the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain to Morocco in just over four-and-a-half hours.
Walliams was sick in the water and the pair saw dolphins and whales.
The swim was the last leg of Cracknell's 10-day trip from the UK to Africa in which he rowed the Channel and cycled through France and Spain.
A reward scheme to recognise the efforts of swimming coaches putting athletes onto the podium at the Beijing Olympics has been unveiled by British Swimming.
Coaches of athletes who medal within the pool based and open water events will receive a bonus determined by the colour of the medal.
British Swimming National Performance Director Michael Scott is responsible for implementing a reward system that he feels goes someway to recognising the invaluable contribution made by coaches in Britain.
"The introduction of incentives to recognise the performance contribution of British-based coaches is an important step in further recognising the vital role and sacrifices coaches also make for the success of British Swimming in the international arena," said Scott.

The FINA Diving World Series returns to Sheffield this spring for the second year and with support from UK Sport and partners from Sheffield and the Yorkshire region the event looks to be even bigger than the first.
The prestigious event promises to showcase potential Olympians in the UK just two months out from the Beijing Olympics.
UK Sport has provided funding support of up to £115,000 from its National Lottery backed World Class Events Programme to support the international diving event. This alongside the support from Sheffield and its partners will help towards a promising legacy programme for the sport.
The programme is designed to extend before and beyond the competition to enthuse young people and volunteers about the sport who would not normally be involved in diving.
Traditionally the FINA World Swimming Championship pool is named after a famous swimmer and you will be able to select which one of the nations Olympic gold medal-winning swimmers it will be named after via an online vote.
The list of nominees include Anita Lonsbrough, Adrian Moorhouse, Duncan Goodhew, David Wilkie and Judy Grinham who are Britains surviving Olympic gold medallists in the swimming pool.
British Swimming has unveiled a Leadership Group that will be the driving force behind the Olympic squads preparations in the run up to the Beijing Games.
National Performance Director Michael Scott will be joined by internationally renowned coaches Ben Titley (Loughborough University) and Fred Vergnoux (City of Edinburgh) in shaping Britains build up to the 2008 Olympics.
The decision to implement a Leadership Group follows Januarys announcement that Head Coach Ian Turner will leave British Swimming at the end of the British Championships (6th April) to take up a role in New Zealand.
Applications for the Nancy Ovens bursary, aimed at coaches or leaders working in the active leisure and learning sector, are once again being accepted.
Having already helped twelve successful applicants over the past two years, SkillsActive is delighted to continue its sponsorship and management of the bursary, on behalf of the Nancy Ovens Trust, into a third year and is looking forward to this years applications.
The bursary aims to support coaches and leaders from across the active leisure and learning sector in undertaking innovative training experiences that are beneficial to their career or voluntary activity. Up to £2,000 will be awarded to allow individuals to enhance their own skills and knowledge by undertaking studies, work experience or activities outside of their day-to-day jobs.
Offering applicants the opportunity to tailor their own training, bursary applications should show intuitive ideas that demonstrate the motivation and drive of applicants. Applications are therefore flexible in terms of proposed experiences as long as they match the application criteria. The bursary is open to all coaches or leaders within the UK who work in the active leisure and learning sector (sport and recreation, health and fitness, the outdoors, playwork and caravans) who have limited access to training in their work.
Andy Osborne, coach at Stroud SC, was successful last year. Previous awardees have used their funding in a number of ways, some to work with mentors both across the UK and abroad in order to broaden their knowledge base, while others have used the funding to find cover for their day job in order to work voluntarily in the community.

A huge opportunity exists to harness sports potential to address development issues in health, gender equality, youth development and social inclusion, a new report published today has found.
The report, entitled 'Shared Goals Through Sport', has been published by the International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF), with its findings endorsed by UK Sport, Nike and Standard Chartered. The report aims to show governments, companies and civil society organisations that there is enormous scope for sport partnerships that achieve social change.
Adrian Hodges, Managing Director of IBLF said:
Sport has huge potential as a catalyst for positive change but is to date a relatively untapped opportunity. The global sports industry has the capability to benefit millions worldwide, especially in developing countries. A stronger collective will from governments, companies and NGOs to work together could increase this influence and reap bigger benefits. Our report demonstrates how to make this happen, in order to maximise sports potential as a force for good.

1 - 2 Mar 2008 - Ponds Forge, Sheffield
Over 200 young Paralympic hopefuls competed in the DSE competition sponsored by Nationwide Building Society. Three World, six European and numerous British records were broken in the championship highlighting the importance of such an event.
The weekend belonged to Ben Procter from Cornwall. Ben, who will be eighteen years old next week, will be too old next year to compete in this junior event, so was determined to have lasting memories. He did that by breaking two world records in the S14 50m and 100m Butterfly. The new times of 27.85secs and 1min02.03 respectively were enough to beat Craig Rodgie from Scotland on both occasions for the top spot.
Ben moved from Oldham to Truro, Cornwall in September last year to concentrate on his training. He is now a member of the swim academy in the South West region. His achievements were enough to reward him with the Nationwide bursary for the boys older age group. The bursary can be used towards the increasing costs of sporting participation. He remarked about the weekend:
Im ecstatic about my performance. It was my last event competing as a junior and I have made it one to remember. Ive worked so hard at my new college and it has paid off. The 50m and 100m Fly are my favourite strokes, so to achieve world records in them was an extra reward to the bursary I will get from Nationwide. I will now be focussing on the international competitions ahead.

Nominations are invited from members interested in acting as the Chairman of the Technical Water Polo Committee (Volunteer Role).
The Chairman of the Technical Water Polo Committee will be expected to chair the meetings and to provide leadership and guidance to the committee members and committee administrator. Nominees must be members of the ASA and may not be members of the ASA Committee or in full time employment of the ASFGB, Scottish ASA, Welsh ASA or ASA.

At the last ASA SW region Diving Committee meeting, it was agreed to look at the structure of the existing working group and as a result it was decided that the new positions / structure within the group be advertised across the Region for open recruiment.
