  Dorset swimmers All Stars weekend

  Dorset County ASA Talent ID swimmers found themselves rubbing shoulders with British stars of the pool in April 2008 at a training course held at the superb, newly built John Charles Centre for Sport, Leeds.

  The swim camp was led by Total Swimming, comprising Alex Scotcher, 4x 200m freestyle relay Commonwealth Champion 2006, Adrian Turner, double Commonwealth medallist and Olympic finalist, Darren Wigg, twice British record holder for the 400m Individual Medley and James Hickman, five times world champion and twice world record holder for the 200m butterfly.

  In addition to this glittering line-up, the Dorset swimmers were coached by Rob Greenwood, top Age Group Coach 2006-2007 and former Olympic swimmer, and by John Dougall, Assistant Coach at Gallica. Greenwood was very complimentary of the Dorset squad and said: “they’re the best group we’ve had”.

  5th World Open Water Championships 2008

  Britain's long distance swimmers aiming for a place on the starting line of the inaugural Olympic 10km swim this summer in Beijing were looking to guarantee their spot. The six-strong squad included World Championship silver medallist Cassandra Patten and Olympic medallist David Davies and saw two British athletes competing in the male and female 10km races. They needed to finish in the top 10 to guarantee their place at the inaugural Olympic marathon swimming event. The other squad members competed in the 5km event.

  If the country's top ranked swimmer failed to make it into the top 10 in the 10km but their fellow Britain did then their dreams of competing in Beijing would end. If neither of them made it into the top 10 then only the top ranked British swimmer would have a second chance at qualification at the Olympic test event in Beijing.

  The FINA Diving World Series - Team for Sheffield

  Only the world's top eight divers have been invited to compete in the event and number one ranked nation China will be there in force but will face tough competition from Canada, Australia, Russia, the USA, Italy as well as a young British contingent.

  The British squad includes many of the same names that competed in the World Cup in Beijing in February. European Champion Tom Daley (Plymouth Diving) will be competing in both the 10m synchro and the 10m individual as he returns to action after earlier this month competing in the Mexico leg of the World Series.

  Olympic medallist Peter Waterfield (Southampton Diving) will be targeting a comeback from his recent injury in the men's 10m individual, while Monique McCarroll (Southampton Diving) and Sarah Barrow (Plymouth Diving) will compete in the 10m Synchro at their first World Series on home soil together

  Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games Nominations

  West stars are amongst the 36 swimmers nominated by British Swimming for the British team for the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games.

  The squad features a mix of youth and experience, with 13-year-old Eleanor Simmonds, nominated for her first Games, while 45-year-old Jim Anderson will be potentially travelling to his fifth Games. Simmonds, who is the youngest member of the squad is joined by other Paralympic debutants, including 14-year-old Elizabeth Simpkin, 19-year-old Kate Grey (Bristol/ Bath), 18-year-old Rachael Latham (Wigan) and 15-year-old Louise Watkin.

  Paralympic champions Dave Roberts (Cardiff), Sascha Kindred (Hereford), Nyree Lewis (Hereford), Natalie Jones (Manchester) and Gareth Duke (Cwmbran) have also been nominated to travel to the Beijing Games with the goal of defending their titles and adding to their personal medal hauls.   British Swimming National Performance Director Tim Reddish said: “The team has a good mix of youth and experience, with 45% of the team potentially attending their first Paralympic Games. This is really pleasing because it will prove to be beneficial for all of our athletes, coaches and support staff,” Reddish said. “The average age of this squad is younger than the one that competed in Athens and this demonstrates that the systems and programmes that British Swimming have in place are working well.

  ASA South West and the County Swimming Associations of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire are delighted to announce that volunteers working within clubs in these Counties may apply for bursaries towards the cost of teaching and coaching courses.
