  ASA National Age Group Diving Championships 2009 - Day 1

  3 to 5 July 2009 - Leeds

  Honours were shared on the first day with golds for City of Leeds DC, Crystal Palace DC, Cambridge Dive Team, Plymouth Diving and Southampton DA as divers aged from 8-18 years took to the springboard and platforms.

  In the Girls Group D 1m, Crystal Palace DC swept the board, taking seven of the top eight places in the 19-strong field. Jemma Stephensen edged out team mates Katherine Torrance and Jessica Royes with some consistent scoring midway through her programme for her back, reverse and inward dives.

  While it was up to Plymouth Diving club to fight out the top three spots in the Girls Group E 3m. It was Eloise King who with a score of 94.35 who took first place ahead of Abbey Douglas and Jessica Lidstone.

  European Junior Diving Championships 2009 - Day 2

  1 to 5 July 2009 - Budapest

  A successful day for the British Gas team saw Jack Haslam take the bronze medal in the Boys’ Group B 3m event after a consistent performance that earned him a new P.B. of 436.25. Another Personal Best was on the cards for British Gas team as Rachel Holland’s 321.80 points landed her just 0.4 away from the medals in the Girls’ B Platform. In the same event Georgia Wingrove secured 6th place, only 4 points off a medal with a P.B. of 318 points.

  Oliver Dingley finished 7th in the 1m Boys A final with a score of 459.45 and James Milton also finished 7th in the Boys B 3m final.

  Rad Pursey

  Rad Pursey, a swimming stalwart who married his love of the sport with his professional career to bring sponsorship to the ASA, has passed away.

  The Devon resident was instrumental in securing Green Shield Stamps sponsorship for the ASA’s National Age Group Championships in 1973 and later that year supporting England’s first ever National Age Group Swimming Squad, latterly the Green Shield National Youth Squad.

  Pursey, who at the time was the trading stamp company’s Merchandising Manager, had already been involved with the ASA at county level with the then Southern Counties and at the time of the sponsorship deal described himself as a ‘very keen Age Group parent’.

  World University Games 2009 - Swimming squad announced for 25th Universiade Belgrade 2009

  1 -12 July 2009 - Belgrade, Serbia (Swimming competition begins on 5 July)

  The Great Britain Swimming Squad for the World University Games has been announced. The selection, which was delayed due to the World Championships selection, includes five male and two female swimmers.

  Three of the athletes have experienced the World University Games previously, having been part of Team GBR in Bangkok 2007. Matthew Clay (University of Bath) returned home from Bangkok with a Bronze in the 50m Backstroke. Clay was a Gold medalist at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and will look to impress in Belgrade this year.

  Prince William lends support to Water Polo

  The Prince will be among the many avid supporters and spectators at next week’s LEN European Nations Trophy in Manchester when the British Women’s team go head-to-head with Slovakia. The Royal guest will also meet with individual players and key figures within the sport and business communities.

  Prince William is passionate about the sport and while at St Andrew’s University was a keen member of the water polo team. In 2004 he was selected to represent Scotland Universities in an international tournament and while serving in the Army also played water polo.

  36th European Junior Swimming Championships 2009

  8 to 12 July 2009 - Prague

  A squad of 57 of Britain’s top junior swimmers are finalising their preparations as they bid to take on Europe’s best next week for international honours.

  The British Gas swimmers will face tough competition from large squads from Russia and Germany as they aim to continue the steady rate of improvement that British Junior athletes have shown on the European stage.

  New Venue for UK Coaching Awards 2009

  Each year the Awards, hosted by sports coach UK, honours coaches who have achieved outstanding success over the past 12 months, as well as recognising the hard work and achievements of those involved in developing coaches. The event is seen as one of the most prestigious within the industry and is attended by some of the most important and influential people in sport and coaching.

  CCPR Sports Club Survey

  A quick reminder - the closing date for the Central Council for Physical Recreation (CCPR) Sports Club Survey sent to club contacts is 3 July 2009. The CCPR is the umbrella body for national governing bodies and representative bodies of sport and recreation in the UK. The survey will help the CCPR to lobby Government and other organisations effectively on behalf of sport in the UK.

  Survey answers are anonymous and confidential, but to complete the survey you will need a copy of your clubs annual report and accounts from the last two years to hand.

  Blue Peter Badge for Mark Perry

  British Swimming’s Mark Perry has been awarded an iconic Blue Peter badge after lending his Open Water expertise to two of the show’s presenters.

  Perry, British Swimming’s Open Water Performance Manager, has been coaching Blue Peter presenters Joel Defries and Helen Shelton as they train to take part in the Bosporus Swim in Turkey this summer.

  Change to Sporting Champions Visits

  In the past few months the partnership of Creating Excellence and the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust has successfully secured the contract to deliver Sporting Champions on behalf of Sport England for the next two years.

  Through a period of consultation with County Sports Partnerships (CSPs) and Champions, the scheme has been aligned with the new strategy, specifically focussing on the Five Hour Offer, contributing mostly towards supporting Sport Unlimited targets. The aspiration is for the Champions to be able to build long-term sustainable relationships with young people and their sporting network to support CSPs with their targets of raising participation in semi-sporty young people.

  More international success for British Gas Men's Water Polo team

  The British Gas men’s Water Polo team have enjoyed success in a Water Polo tournament hosted by the Polish Federation of Water Polo. Having just come back from Istanbul as tournament victors, the boys were set for another competitive tournament in Poland. The British Gas team faced up to both Poland, who will feature as a European B competitor, and Kazakhstan.

  The British Gas team of 14 were missing various senior players which gave the younger players a chance to step up in the matches.

  The first match against Kazakhstan saw the Brits lead after nine minutes 5 – 0. However, they were faced with a tough fight back from the Kazakhstan team and the match ended 9 -7 to the Kazakhstan players. The British Gas team picked themselves up and won their next match against Poland convincingly 12 – 7. Going into the next day the Brits were brimming with confidence and beat Poland again 10 – 8.

  European Junior Diving Championships 2009

  1 to 5 July 2009 - Budapest

  Day 1
  Saffron Sutcliffe and Hannah Starling (both City of Leeds) won the British Gas Junior Diving team’s first medal. Competing in the first event of the competition, the girl’s 3m Synchro, they took on some of Europe’s top diving nations and came away with the silver medal after an impressive performance.

  They were beaten by the Russian duo after they scored 284.90 points and the British Gas pair secured a score of 255.09 with a number of consistent dives.The bronze medal was won by Greece with 253.98.

  British Synchro National Coaches and Judges Clinic

  18 to 20 September 2009 - Farnborough and Aldershot

  The clinic focussing on Artistic Impression and presented by British Synchro National Performance Director Biz Price, will feature guest presenter Anna Tarres, Spanish Olympic Head Coach, and an international judge (TBC), and will look at creating and judging a balance of creative and technical elements to form a total routine. Information will also be shared on FINA updates and the new technical elements.
