Although Government investment for free swimming for under-16s and over-60s in England dried up on 31 July 2010 as part of cost-saving measures, 49 local authorities have opted to continue funding the scheme themselves.

Meanwhile, Scottish primary school pupils are set to benefit from free swimming lessons after an £800,000 investment from the Scottish Government. The money will be divided among local authorities who will work with sportscotland and Scottish Swimming to implement the plan.
