  Friends of Water Polo launch website and Petition

  A website for Friends of Water Polo has been launched with two initial objectives:-
  

  1. To lobby for sufficient funding to enable competitive GB squads to participate in the men’s/women’s events in London 2012
  2. To put in place fund raising initiatives to provide continuity and certainty in the future funding of our sport's development at every level.

  The site is urging action now as water polo is one of eight sports yet to have its funding for 2012 decided by UK Sport. It also gives an idea of what's been done and what will happen between now and 29 January 2009.

  You can contribute by telling your friends, getting involved and signing up to Frances Lawlor's petition on the 10 Downing Street website.

  British Swimming Disciplinary Code (June 2007) amended

  British Swimming Disciplinary Code (June 2007) has been amended. These amendments will come into force as from 1 February 2009.

  One of the amendments is to the name of the document. From the 1 February 2009, it is to be called the “British Swimming Judicial Code (February 2009)”.

  Beyond Sport Awards

  Beyond Sport, the global initiative for social change backed by former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, has opened its inaugural Beyond Sport Awards for entries. There are 11 Award categories covering the entire sporting spectrum of corporate and social responsibility, change and philanthropy. A shortlist of entries will go before the Beyond Sport Judging Panel of Ambassadors, chaired by Tony Blair, who will choose the winner of each category.

  Survey Shows Public Pride in British Sporting Success

  Seventy two per cent of the British public say that the performances of our athletes in the Olympic and Paralympic Games made them proud to be British, according to a major new survey published by UK Sport today (Monday).

  The UK Sport Sporting Preferences survey of over 2,000 members of the public was carried out before and then after Beijing, and shows that across the Board interest in Olympic and Paralympic sport increased significantly during the Games. While Athletics and Swimming remain the most popular Olympic sports, the biggest winners were Cycling – with twice as many people as before the summer now saying they want international success in the sport and particularly medals in 2012.

  Dorset County ASA selected 35 age group swimmers to attend a long-course training day at the University of Bath.

  This season's programme is being led by Emma Hirst and Sam Woodward.

  The swimmers were given the opportunity to train for 2 hours alongside their peers from other clubs, take part in a core stability session run by the University of Bath's strength and conditioning coach as well as meet David Davies, Olympic silver medallist and 2008's male swimmer of the year.

  David Davies ran a skills session in the water with the swimmers in the afternoon. The swimmers were able to watch David both swim and demonstrate specific drills that he uses to improve technique.

  Olympic Results help to shape future of Open Water

  Britain's medal-winning performances and dominance of the marathon swimming events at the Beijing Games has kick-started a wave of interest in the newest sport to be included in the Olympic programme.

  The subsequent enthusiasm and support shown towards open water, from those within swimming as well as the public at large, is something British Swimming Open Water Performance Manager Mark Perry believes will be a major factor in its continued success.

  The British trio of David Davies, Keri-Anne Payne and Cassie Patten took three of the six available medals from 10km events in Beijing and in doing so highlighted the vital work of a team of people that has put Britain at the very forefront of open water swimming. As good as the summer of 2008 was for the open water programme, Perry knows it will take an even greater effort to retain Britain's formidable reputation while looking to build on those results.

  Officials required for 2009 events

  We require your help in providing officials for our events in 2009 which include the Championships, Age Groups and Masters as well as other events for which we are asked to provide officials. These events will give you experience and the opportunity to meet other officials in the region and share information. We particularly look forward to having the newly qualified officials on poolside and giving them a warm welcome.

  All events that cover more than one session during the day provide refreshments between sessions and a contribution towards travel at an agreed rate provided that more than one session during the day is attended as an official. This year I have also included information on other expenses such as overnight stays for those who volunteer to work for a whole weekend together with a form to complete so that the Regional Office can book accommodation.

  Please pass this request on to any other officials you know, and circulate within clubs. There are Time Trials for the 800/1500m on the 18 & 24 January , if anyone can help at these please advise Lynne Elliott separately as obviously this needs to be arranged very soon.

  Clubs will need to provide officials at the events that they have swimmers attending – this does not necessarily mean the official they nominate has to belong to their club, but it does mean they must make sure they have someone representing them on poolside, for the larger clubs this will mean more than one official. So please make sure your club is organising this, and it does include the distance events in January.

  We held a successful seminar in November, approximately 70 officials attended and their names have been forwarded to the ASA so that it is included on their CPD for those who are a Licensed Official. The rules will change next year for Licensed Events and it will mean more officials will need to be Licensed. This year we are considering holding seminars in different areas of the region – perhaps 3 venues so that it will be easier for people to attend.

  Swimmers and Coaches in New Year Honours List

  Olympic and Paralympic swimmers and coaches have rounded off an exceptional year with New Year Honours.

  Paralympic swimmer Ellie Simmonds becomes the youngest person to be awarded an honour and is joined by Dave Roberts, with a record 11 Paralympic gold medals, and double Olympic gold medallist Becky Adlington. Roberts receives a CBE while Adlington is awarded an OBE.

  Simmonds, who only turned 14 in November, won two gold medals in Beijing and is appointed MBE. Being nominated for such things as the BBC Midlands Sports Personality and BBC Young Sports Personality is one thing. Making the final few has felt like reward enough for Simmonds, but winning has been a joyful and humbling experience especially when the stage is shared with such talents as Chris Hoy, Rebecca Adlington, Lee Pearson and many, many others.

  British Diving to appoint Alexei Evangulov as National Performance Director

  British Diving will appoint the Head Coach of the Russian Diving team to the role of National Performance Director tasked with leading Britain to the 2012 Olympics.

  Russian Alexei Evangulov will undertake the post from March and will be responsible for driving forward the British Diving programme over the next quadrennial leading to the London Olympics.

  A former international diver from 1974 to 1980, Evangulov has overseen the management of the Russian Diving programme over the past 16 years and lead Russia to three silver and two bronze medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

  Adlington wins BOA award

  World record holder Rebecca Adlington has been awarded the British Olympic Association’s (BOA) 2008 Olympic Athlete of the Year Trophy for aquatics.

  The British Swimming Board, who received nominations for the award from across the disciplines, chose Adlington (19) after her extremely successful year, where her performances in Beijing made her the most successful Olympic swimmer for almost 100 years.

  the asa invites nominations for Sports Club of the Year

  The asa is looking for up to three swim21 accredited clubs to put forward for the nation’s Sports Club of the Year – where the successful club will win £6,000.

  The asa can nominate and endorse a trio of swim21 clubs for the award, given by the CCPR – the national alliance for sport and recreation – in association with The Foundation for Sport and the Arts. The successful aquatic candidates will compete against nominations from other governing bodies.

  Clubs who already have swim21 accreditation – the asa’s ‘quality mark’ – are being asked to throw their names into the hat if they feel they provide opportunities for everyone (athletes, coaches and volunteers) to experience quality activities at all levels. The CCPR are also looking at those who take an innovative approach to the promotion of the club.

  Avalon Leisure sign 5 year agreement with the asa

  Avalon Leisure has signed a five year agreement with the asa to deliver the National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS) and asa/Kellogg’s awards.

  The agreement covers its three sites in Somerset; Strode Swimming Pool, Wells Leisure Centre and Frome Leisure Centre, all of which are owned by Mendip District Council and operated in partnership by Western Community Leisure and Avalon Leisure.

  The NPTS is a programme that takes non-swimmers from learning to swim through to full competence in the water. Learn more about the NPTS and sign up to quarterly newsletters about the NPTS.

  the asa secures 10% increase in Sport England funding

  The asa has welcomed news that it is to receive a 10 per cent increase in its funding from Sport England.

  The English National Governing Body for Swimming, Diving, Water Polo, Open Water, and Synchronised Swimming, will receive nearly £21m from the agency to get people of all ages and abilities swimming in every community.

  The investment comes as Sport England announces their investment priorities for sports for the next four years, up to 2013.

  More Clubs secure Swim21 quality mark

  Nearly 50 clubs have secured swim21 accreditation – the asa’s ‘quality mark’ – many thanks to changes made by the asa in answer to clubs’ feedback.

  At its latest meeting, the swim21 National Panel approved 33 submissions from clubs applying for first time accreditation, and a further 16 from clubs lining up for reaccreditation for a further four years.

  swim21 accreditation means every club is providing safe, effective and quality services for the benefit of their swimmers and non-swimming members.

  Team Bath Grand Prix 2008 (Level 1)

  5 to 7 December 2008 - the Sports Training Village, University of Bath

  TeamBath won the overall team title, ahead of Barnet Copthall and Portsmouth Northsea.

  TeamBath swimmers Charlie Barnes and Richard Webb warmed up for the European Short Course Championships by taking part in one event each ahead of representing Great Britain in Croatia – and both emerged as winners.

  Bernie Nicol 1938 - 2008

  Bernie Nicol, a beacon in the world of swimming coaching and sport in general, recently passed away and members of Team Bath were amongst those attending his funeral.

  Bernie was a man who dedicated his life to the development of young people through sport. The University of Bath annual swim grand prix will now be renamed the TeamBath Bernie Nicol Memorial Meet in his honour.

  Sports Coach UK Coaching Awards 2008

  British Swimming was named Governing Body of the Year at the Sports Coach UK Coaching Awards on 17 December 2008 at the prestigious Dorchester Hotel in London’s Mayfair.

  Sports Coach UK recognised British Swimming for coach education and coach development, which is supported by work done by the home countries governing bodies. They were named the winner of the National prize ahead of British Cycling and England Hockey.

  Bill Furniss, recently named BSCTA Coach of the Year 2008 in recognition of his work with double Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington, also had a successful evening, picking up two awards. He was presented with The Coaching Chain: The Appreciation of Coaching Award, along with Linda Bennett, Ian Negus and Glenn Smith. The award is in recognition of all the coaches that have contributed to an athlete’s success - Rebecca Adlington on this occasion. The swimming superstar herself was there to present the award to her previous and current coaches.

  The Sunday Times Sportswomen of the Year Awards 2008

  The nominations for The Sunday Times Sportswomen of the Year Awards 2008 are now open and you can vote for successful sportswomen in ten top categories. The annual awards recognise sporting achievements of women throughout British sports in categories including Olympian of the Year, Unsung Hero Award and Sportswoman of the Year.

  The presentation of each of the ten awards will take place at Lord’s Cricket Ground on 12 February 2009.

  British Open Water Swimming holds open day

  The British Open Water Team held an open day in december 2008 at Loughborough University organised by Open Water Performance Manager Mark Perry.

  Perry heads up Open Water swimming in Great Britain and one of his first tasks is to get the sport into the public eye. In order to do this, the talented young British swimmers need to step into the shoes of Britain’s Olympic medallists.

  The open day introduced potential Open Water swimmers to the techniques, skills and tactics of open water swimming in addition to exploring many other aspects of the sport with their coaches and parents.

  The LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships (25m) 2008 - Day 1

  11 to 14 December 2008 - Rijeka, Croatia

  Britain’s swimmers were in the medals on day one of the European Short Course Championships in Croatia and posted four new British Records in the process. British Swimming's celebrated Olympians and next generation of swimmers were taking their first step along road to London 2012 in Croatia.

  Twelve athletes from the Beijing Olympics will combine with a number of swimmers competing for the first time at senior international level for Great Britain but all will appreciate the starting point on their journey towards 2012.

  Gold went to new European Champion James Goddard in the Men’s 200m Individual Medley when he touched first in 1:53.46 more than a second ahead of Vytautas Janusaitis of Lithuania in 1:54.51 with the silver and bronze went to Spain’s Alan Cabello Forns in 1:55.70.

  Jemma Lowe took Britain’s second medal of the first day’s action in Rijeka in the Women’s 200m Butterfly. Gold went to Petra Granlund of Sweden in 2:04.27, silver to Aurore Mongel of France in 2:04.73 and Lowe finished with the bronze in 2:04.78. Team mate Jess Dickons also went in the final and finished fifth in 2:07.28.

  Welcome to the world of mini-polo!

  This short video by the Saanich Water Polo School in British Colombia, Canada shows why mini-polo is taking off all over the world. It offers a useful demonstration of how children can be trained to be all-round world-class athletes without them even realizing it because they're having so much fun with balls in the water.

  Swimming remains most popular sport

  Swimming remains the highest participation sport according to the results of Sport England’s second Active People Survey.

  A total of 3.24m adults said they had taken part in swimming at a ‘moderate intensity for 30 minutes or more at least once in the last week’ when questioned as part of the Sport England 2007/8 survey released today (Thursday 11th December 2008). This is 7.83% of the adult population.

  ‘Swimming’ in the survey covers all swimming and diving (indoor and outdoor), water polo, deep water swimming, open water swimming and deep water diving.

  Women's Water Polo - LEN European Trophy 2008

  The City of Liverpool enjoyed an excellent weekend in Europe as they clocked up the best ever result for a British club competing in a European competition when they finished fourth in the LEN European Trophy. The women’s team was competing in Group B of the qualifying stages and secured some impressive performances against some of the best clubs in Europe.

  Liverpool didn’t have a good start to the tournament with two losses to Dutch side Polar Bear Ede and Russian club Dinamo Izmailovo Moscow. But the British side picked themselves up for their next match against German team Hannover SV and battled to a victory with a score of 13 - 8. The Brits then took on VKD TAS 2000 – Belgrade and drew this match five goals all.

  Liverpool concluded the competition with two wins over Spanish club Club Natación Moscardó Usera and French side Lille Université Club. The match against Club Natación Moscardó Usera was a close battle with Liverpool the eventual victors with a score of 10 – 9. The final match for Liverpool was against Lille Université Club and they won the match comfortably with a score of 5 - 1.

  The club finished fourth in the table with a total of 10 points and just missed out on third place on goal difference.
