The Boys showed they werent to be outdone on the penultimate day of the British Gas ASA National Youth Championships (50m) 2010, with a British Age Group record set for each sex along the way.
Plymouth Leanders Joseph Patching added to his medal tally with victory and a new British Age Group Record in the Boys 15/16yrs 200m Backstroke. The 16-year-old was given a shock on the first length when Sam Horrocks (Co Manch Aq) turned in under 29 seconds but Patching, swimming in lane 5, showed his superiority and at the half way point was two body lengths clear of the field. He maintained his lead to the end and touched in the new best time of 2:02.08, more than four seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
That was amazing, he gasped. I had the 200m Free semi final just before so I knew it would be tough. But I also knew I was on the pace when I turned in a minute and had 1.01 to come back. Its been a pretty good evening.
Patching also managed to qualify seventh for Day 5's final of the Boys 200m Freestyle, in a race where Louis Croenen (VZF Belgium) qualified more than two seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Horrocks qualified fastest for the 100m Butterfly.
There was an exciting fight to the finish in the older age category, with David Gregory (Plymouth Leander) finally emerging victorious in the Boys 17/18yrs 200m Backstroke. He finished in 2:02.86, just eight one hundredths ahead of silver medallist Charlie Boldison (Barnet Copt).
"
Thats probably the best win Ive ever got at Nationals because Ive been having a pretty poor season for a number of reasons.
Id lost the 100m Backstroke [on Wednesday] by so little so just to get this win is great.
"
It had been Gregory and eventual bronze medallist Jonathan Carlisle who had turned almost together at the half way point but with 50m to go it looked like Boldison might push on to win until Gregory found extra strength to fight back.
I could see Carlisle behind me and thought everyone was in a line but then I saw Charlie on the other side and thought just keep going. I touched and saw the Plymouth Leander team cheering so I thought I must have won... then I took a look at the board.
