Gloucester City Swimming Development, in partnership with Active Gloucestershire, has teamed up to launch a new swimming programme for children with a disability at the GL1 Leisure Centre. The programme, which began on Wednesday 23 April 2008, is funded by ASA (Amateur Swimming Association) PESSCL (PE, School Sport and Club Links) funding and is the first programme of its kind in the South West of England.
The programme is for children between age 8 - 16 who can swim at least 25m unaided and will aim to improve every aspect of each child's swimming, including stroke technique and endurance.
The eventual aim is to establish these sessions as an after-school club, linked to the county's mainstream clubs. Coaches from mainstream clubs will have an involvement in the programme throughout, and may also invite individual swimmers to join mainstream clubs once they have achieved a high enough standard.
The ASA has launched a consultation exercise in relation to amending its Constitution. This Consultation exercise was posted on the ASA website on a dedicated page on 7 May 2008 with a view to engagement in a consultation process for an initial four week period expiring 4 June 2008. During that period any ASA member is invited to provide feedback with regard to any aspect of the proposed constitutional changes.
Following the closure of the initial consultation period all responses will be reviewed by the Working Group who will take due account of all representations in formulating a Report for consideration by the ASA Board at its meeting on 27 June 2008. At that time a decision will be made by the ASA Board, based upon the initial Report of the Working Group and comments and representations from the ASA membership, as to whether to put forward the proposed new ASA constitutional framework for consideration at ASA Council in October 2008. It will of course be open to the Regions and the ASA membership to further consider their responses to the consultation exercise as part and parcel of the democratic process of County Association and Regional Council Meetings during the early Autumn period and prior to the ASA Council Meeting.
Responses to this consultation may be posted on the ASA website by completing its Feedback Form or alternatively by e-mail to the ASA Department of Legal Affairs whose e-mail address is legal@swimming.org or alternative by hard copy correspondence to ASA Department of Legal Affairs (reference ASA Constitutional Review) Harold Fern House, Derby Square, Loughborough, Leics LE11 5AL.
The ASA is consulting to guide the ASA Board in the preparation of a document for ASA Council in October 2008. The ASA would want to have the benefit of the views of the membership on the purpose and structure of its committees in order to ensure that they are fit for purpose to deliver key objectives set out in the ASAs Strategic Plan and Vision.
Questions are intended to help members in providing comments but the aim is not to limit debate. If you think there are other relevant issues, please feel free to include them in your response.
The consultation period will run until 4 June 2008 and the findings will be reported back to ASA Board on 27 June 2008, to allow discussion before preparation of appropriate information for ASA Council in October 2008. Therefore they would like to invite members to give their views either through the ASA website or in writing on the principles of the Review as outlined.

Dorset County ASA Talent ID swimmers found themselves rubbing shoulders with British stars of the pool in April 2008 at a training course held at the superb, newly built John Charles Centre for Sport, Leeds.
The swim camp was led by Total Swimming, comprising Alex Scotcher, 4x 200m freestyle relay Commonwealth Champion 2006, Adrian Turner, double Commonwealth medallist and Olympic finalist, Darren Wigg, twice British record holder for the 400m Individual Medley and James Hickman, five times world champion and twice world record holder for the 200m butterfly.
In addition to this glittering line-up, the Dorset swimmers were coached by Rob Greenwood, top Age Group Coach 2006-2007 and former Olympic swimmer, and by John Dougall, Assistant Coach at Gallica. Greenwood was very complimentary of the Dorset squad and said: theyre the best group weve had.

Britain's long distance swimmers aiming for a place on the starting line of the inaugural Olympic 10km swim this summer in Beijing were looking to guarantee their spot. The six-strong squad included World Championship silver medallist Cassandra Patten and Olympic medallist David Davies and saw two British athletes competing in the male and female 10km races. They needed to finish in the top 10 to guarantee their place at the inaugural Olympic marathon swimming event. The other squad members competed in the 5km event.
If the country's top ranked swimmer failed to make it into the top 10 in the 10km but their fellow Britain did then their dreams of competing in Beijing would end. If neither of them made it into the top 10 then only the top ranked British swimmer would have a second chance at qualification at the Olympic test event in Beijing.

Only the world's top eight divers have been invited to compete in the event and number one ranked nation China will be there in force but will face tough competition from Canada, Australia, Russia, the USA, Italy as well as a young British contingent.
The British squad includes many of the same names that competed in the World Cup in Beijing in February. European Champion Tom Daley (Plymouth Diving) will be competing in both the 10m synchro and the 10m individual as he returns to action after earlier this month competing in the Mexico leg of the World Series.
Olympic medallist Peter Waterfield (Southampton Diving) will be targeting a comeback from his recent injury in the men's 10m individual, while Monique McCarroll (Southampton Diving) and Sarah Barrow (Plymouth Diving) will compete in the 10m Synchro at their first World Series on home soil together
West stars are amongst the 36 swimmers nominated by British Swimming for the British team for the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games.
The squad features a mix of youth and experience, with 13-year-old Eleanor Simmonds, nominated for her first Games, while 45-year-old Jim Anderson will be potentially travelling to his fifth Games. Simmonds, who is the youngest member of the squad is joined by other Paralympic debutants, including 14-year-old Elizabeth Simpkin, 19-year-old Kate Grey (Bristol/ Bath), 18-year-old Rachael Latham (Wigan) and 15-year-old Louise Watkin.
Paralympic champions Dave Roberts (Cardiff), Sascha Kindred (Hereford), Nyree Lewis (Hereford), Natalie Jones (Manchester) and Gareth Duke (Cwmbran) have also been nominated to travel to the Beijing Games with the goal of defending their titles and adding to their personal medal hauls. (For a full list of nominated athletes please see below).
British Swimming National Performance Director Tim Reddish said: The team has a good mix of youth and experience, with 45% of the team potentially attending their first Paralympic Games. This is really pleasing because it will prove to be beneficial for all of our athletes, coaches and support staff, Reddish said. The average age of this squad is younger than the one that competed in Athens and this demonstrates that the systems and programmes that British Swimming have in place are working well.
