Woodland Games Festival 2010

Come along to the Swindon Woodland Games Festival held at Lydiard Park. Its a free family event with plenty to entertain you and keep you active at the same time. The Woodland Games will feature a host of unusual sports and fun activities including disc golf, the amazing mobile climbing wall, rock-it-ball, samba football, and wacky bicycles. You can also learn to play the exciting and fast moving sport of Ultimate Frisbee, with national representatives on hand to provide coaching advice. The event has been organized by the Great Western Community Forest as part of Natural England's Green Exercise initiative to encourage people to get out into their local green spaces and think about new and enjoyable ways of keeping active.

Wiltshire Alternative Youth Sports and Wiltshire Council present the first of three skate jams to find the top skaters, inline and BMX riders in the county. This high profile awards evening will take place on Tuesday 14th September 7pm-10pm at Devizes Corn Exchange

The awards evening will be a chance to reward and recognise some of the fantastic work that you as sports clubs, volunteers, coaches and schools have been doing in the county. They will tie into the BBC and Sports Coach Awards and the Sports Coach UK Awards later in the year

Mens Health Week

National Mens Health Week is organised annually by the Mens Health Forum. This years theme is: Men and Physical Activity.

Physical activity can improve all aspects of health, from relieving stress and anxiety to losing weight, reducing the risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes, and improving sexual performance.

The 2010 Week - 14-20 June - will be the first-ever national campaign to encourage men and boys to become more physically active.

MHF aims to get men up off the sofa and walking, jogging, gardening, swimming, playing sport... in short, moving more.

We will harness the power and resources of professional sport to reach more men with new health services and campaigns.

Step Up: Understanding the ISA Vetting & Barring Scheme

This event is organised by NCVO in partnership with the Learning Curve, funded by Capacitybuilders Improving Support Do you want to learn about the new ISA vetting and barring scheme and find out what other organisations are doing in preparation? This interactive half-day session led by Ruth Morgan, Seaborn Training will provide a shapshot view of the Independent Safeguarding Authoritys Vetting and Barring Scheme. Youll look at the key changes which come into force in October and the timeframe within which the scheme is being introduced. Youll understand the differences between how employees should be regulated and gain insight into how this will affect the workings of your organisation. This session will help you to answer: What is context and legislation behind the vetting and barring scheme? What does regulated and controlled activity mean and how will this look in practice? How do I register staff on the VBS scheme and what processes will I need in place? What timescale do I need to work to, as the scheme is introduced? Where can I go for further help and support? There will be opportunity to apply your understanding in case studies and problem scenarios and share your experiences and challenges with other members of the group. Light refreshments of teas, coffees and biscuits will be provided. While this event is free to attend, preference is given to voluntary and community organisations. WASP, in partnership with Wiltshire Council and Swindon Borough Council are running a Volunteering Forum on Tuesday 8th June 2010 to support sports clubs in recruiting, retaining and rewarding volunteers.

The event costs just £5 per attendee, and will run at Devizes Sports Club from 6.30 to 9.30pm.

Sports Coach UK has produced a series of short video clips aimed at parents and carers who are interested in becoming sports coaches.

The short films such as "Become a coach - A parent as a coach" below (2m 43s flashplayer required to view) provide real life information and advice on how to become a coach and what the next steps are. The clips are hosted on the newly created sports coach UK YouTube channel and on the sports coach UK website.
